Transforming complex NHS medicine expenditure data into actionable insights through innovative visualisations, empowering smarter, cost-saving decisions.
From data to decisions: Revolutionising healthcare medicine expenditure with actionable insights
The Challenge
The NHS faced a complex challenge: automating the workflow of data analysts tasked with creating actionable data visualisations to track medicine expenditure. The solution also needed to identify opportunities for switching to biosimilar medicines—offering substantial potential cost savings. This was a data-heavy initiative requiring precision, usability, and security.
Adding to the complexity was the tight timeline. With just four months to deliver, the project demanded a solution that not only met the functional requirements but could be implemented rapidly.
Our Approach
To tackle this challenge, we adopted a collaborative, innovative, and highly agile approach:
- User Research: Engaged with stakeholders and end users to establish the user needs and uncover new requirements.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Engaged closely with NHS stakeholders to ensure the solution met real-world needs. This included conducting user research to understand how analysts interact with data and tailoring features to streamline their processes.
- Development and UX Design: Recognising the importance of user experience, we focused on creating actionable data visualisations. Using tools like WordPress, Nova, and Laravel, we built a robust platform that combined intuitive design with powerful analytics, ensuring users could derive insights and act on them quickly.
- Security and Hosting: With sensitive healthcare data in play, we integrated vulnerability testing into the development cycle to ensure compliance with the highest security standards. Hosting was designed for reliability and scalability, minimising risks and downtime.
- Dynamic Agile Process: Regular “show and tells” allowed for continuous feedback from stakeholders, ensuring that development aligned with expectations. Constant iteration enabled us to adapt quickly to challenges and deliver innovative solutions within the deadline.
This combination of user-centered design, cutting-edge technology, and agile methodologies pushed the boundaries of what’s been done in this space.
The Result
The project is on the verge of going live, culminating in the creation of a self-serve extension to the existing customer website. The platform empowers NHS teams with actionable data visualisations that provide real-time insights into medicine expenditure and opportunities for switching to biosimilars.
With the potential to have a measurable financial impact on the NHS, this project exemplifies how innovation and collaboration can transform data-heavy challenges into practical, impactful solutions.
